The Ignition Interlock License
Ala. Code § 32-5A-191.4 — a breath test before the engine starts, set at 0.02
An ignition interlock device keeps a vehicle from starting until the driver gives a breath sample, and it is set so the vehicle will not start at a blood alcohol level of 0.02. Trained technicians install, calibrate and monitor it in person, and mail in or remote calibration is not allowed.

On a first DUI conviction, the 90 day suspension is put on hold for a driver who chooses an interlock for 90 days, shows proof it is installed, and gets an ignition interlock restricted license. The rest of the suspension is dropped once the interlock period is done.
- A person with an interlock, ordered or chosen, pays the court $200, which can be paid in installments.
- The person names the vehicle by its identification number, and may add more vehicles at their own expense.
- The person drives only the designated vehicle with a working interlock for the time the offense calls for.
- The restricted license itself costs no more than $150.
