A Minnesota landlord returns the deposit with interest, or gives the tenant a written statement of the specific reason for keeping any part of it, within three weeks after the tenancy ends and after receiving the tenant's mailing address or delivery instructions. When the tenant leaves because the building was condemned, not through the tenant's own conduct, the time is five days.

Ask for a page

Name the topic or the situation. A person reads every request, and what people ask for decides which Minnesota pages get written next.

Leave it blank and the request stays anonymous. We do not record your IP either way.

About this guide — education built from the Minnesota Statutes as the Revisor of Statutes publishes them, not a law degree in a webpage. Applying them to a particular situation is the work of a licensed Minnesota attorney or a legal aid office. Current as of September 2026.

This guide covers common situations in real Minnesota encounters. Not the whole legal code, not a replacement for a lawyer.
