Someone asked

“How long does a landlord in Maine have to return a deposit?”

Getting the Deposit Back

The landlord returns the full deposit, or a written statement itemizing the reasons for keeping part of it with the rest of the money, within the time a written rental agreement states, never more than 30 days, or within 21 days after a tenancy at will ends or the tenant surrenders the unit, whichever is later.

Name the topic or the situation. A person reads every request, and what people ask for decides which Maine pages get written next.

Leave it blank and the request stays anonymous. We do not record your IP either way.

About this guide — education built from the Maine Revised Statutes as the Maine Legislature publishes them, not a law degree in a webpage. Applying it to a particular situation is the work of a licensed Maine attorney or a legal aid office. Current as of October 2026.

This guide covers common situations in real Maine encounters. Not the whole body of law, not a replacement for a lawyer.
