Getting Public Records
AS 40.25.110 — open during office hours, copies at the unit cost, and personnel costs past five person-hours a month
Unless a law says otherwise, the public records of every public agency are open to inspection by the public under reasonable rules during regular office hours, and the custodian gives a certified copy on request and payment of the fee.
Who handles this in Alaska: legal aid programs, lawyer referral and the state offices, listed in the Alaska directory.
- The copying fee may not be more than the agency's standard unit cost of duplication.
- When one requester's records take more than five person-hours in a month, the agency charges the actual personnel costs, paid before the work.
- An agency may reduce or waive a fee in the public interest, applied alike to people in the same position.
