Keeping Lost Property
AS 11.46.160 — keeping something known to be lost, without reasonable measures to return it, is theft
A person commits theft of lost or mislaid property by getting another's property knowing it was lost, mislaid, or delivered by mistake as to what it was, how much, or who should get it, and not taking reasonable measures to return it, meaning to deprive the owner.
Who handles this in Alaska: Alaska Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service; and legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Alaska directory.
Reasonable measures include telling the identified owner or a peace officer. The degree turns on value like any theft, so property worth less than $250 is theft in the fourth degree, a class B misdemeanor.
