The Insurance Requirement
AS 28.22.011 — liability insurance on the road system, a $500 fine for no proof, and a 90 day suspension after a crash
The driver or owner of a vehicle that has to be registered is insured under a liability policy, or self insured, when it is driven on a highway, a vehicular way or area, or other public property in Alaska.
Who handles this in Alaska: Alaska Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service; and legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Alaska directory.
Off the road system. Insurance is not required on roads that are not connected to the state highway system or to a road carrying more than 499 vehicles a day, unless the driver was cited in the last five years for a violation worth six or more points. The state publishes the list of those areas every year.
Not having proof of insurance in hand, or not showing it on demand, is an infraction with a mandatory fine of $500. Proof may be a copy of the policy, an insurer's card or electronic certification, or a display on a phone.
