Stopping for a School Bus
C.R.S. 42-4-1903 — stop at least 20 feet back from either direction, and a class 1 misdemeanor traffic offense on a second in five years
A driver meeting or overtaking a stopped school bus from either direction stops at least 20 feet before reaching it when its visual signal lights are on, and does not go on until they stop.
Who handles this in Colorado: legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Colorado directory.
- A school bus driver who sees a violation reports the vehicle's color, description and plate to the district dispatcher.
- A law enforcement agency may issue a citation based on that report.
Passing a stopped school bus is a class 2 misdemeanor traffic offense, or class 1 if the driver was convicted of the same within the previous five years.
