Small Claims Court
C.R.S. 13-6-403 — claims up to seven thousand five hundred dollars, and people represent themselves
Colorado's small claims court hears civil actions where the debt, damage or value of personal property claimed by either side, apart from interest and costs, does not exceed seven thousand five hundred dollars.
Who handles this in Colorado: Denver District Court Self-Help Center; and legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Colorado directory.
- Enforcing a restrictive covenant on residential property, where complying costs no more than that.
- Replevin, getting property back, where it is worth no more than that.
- Enforcing a contract by specific performance, or undoing one, where no more than that is at issue.
An individual represents themselves, and a business appears through a partner, officer or full time employee. Where an attorney does appear, as the section allows, the other side may have counsel too, and the case still runs under the small claims rules.
