Driving Without Insurance
Conn. Gen. Stat. § 14-213b — a fine of $100 to $1,000, and a suspension of one month, or six for a second conviction
The owner of a private passenger motor vehicle required to be registered in Connecticut provides and continuously maintains security throughout the registration period, which is to say insurance, or self insurance the Insurance Commissioner approves.
Who handles this in Connecticut: Connecticut Insurance Department, Consumer Affairs Division; and legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Connecticut directory.
- No owner may operate such a vehicle, or let it be operated, without that security or with security below the minimum.
- An operator who does not produce the insurance identification card when asked is prima facie evidence that the owner has not kept the security.
- A law enforcement officer may check the Online Insurance Verification System to see whether an owner or operator has it.

| ConvictionA first conviction | What followsThe registration, and the owner's license, suspended for one month |
| ConvictionA second or later conviction | What followsThe registration and license suspended for six months |
A suspended license is not restored until the owner shows the commissioner that the required security is kept for each vehicle registered in the owner's name. An owner of a vehicle with a commercial registration who knowingly drives it uninsured commits a class D felony.
An owner may ask the insurer in writing to suspend the coverage while the vehicle will not be driven on any highway for not less than thirty consecutive days. Driving it during that time brings the requirement back.
