The Left Lane
Conn. Gen. Stat. § 14-230a — since 1 October 2026, the far left lane is for passing on highways of three or more lanes, $88
Since 1 October 2026, on any divided limited access highway with more than two lanes in the same direction, no driver may drive in the extreme left lane except:
- To overtake and pass another vehicle.
- When a police officer directs it.
- To enter or leave the highway on the left, only as long as needed to do so safely.
- In an emergency vehicle, while working on the highway, or when traffic congestion makes it necessary.
Who handles this in Connecticut: legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Connecticut directory.
A violation is an infraction with an $88 fine. Commercial vehicles, buses, school buses and vehicles towing trailers stay out of the extreme left lane wherever it is so designated, and signs on these highways announce the rule.
