The Insurance Requirement
21 Del. C. § 2118 — driving uninsured costs $1,500 to $2,000 and a 6 month suspension the first time
No owner of a vehicle required to be registered in the State may drive it, or let anyone else drive it, without insurance at the minimums the section sets. They include personal injury protection of at least $15,000 for any 1 person and $30,000 for all persons injured in any 1 accident.

The minimum fine may be suspended in whole or in part where the defendant has secured insurance between the charge and sentencing. A driver who cannot produce the card at a stop or a crash is given a summons, and is not convicted if proof of insurance in force at the time is produced in court before conviction.
A lapse during the registration year brings a penalty of $100 for up to 30 days, rising by $5.00 for each day from the thirty-first day until the insurance is replaced or the tags are surrendered.
