A Permit to Carry
Iowa Code § 724.7 — a permit good for five years, for anyone not disqualified who meets the training rule
A person who is not disqualified under section 724.8, who satisfies the training requirements, and who files an application is issued a nonprofessional permit to carry weapons. The permit is not issued for a particular weapon and names no make, model or serial number. It lasts five years and is valid throughout the state, except where state or federal law prohibits possessing or carrying a firearm.
- No permit is issued to a person who is less than eighteen years of age, or who is addicted to the use of alcohol.
- Nor to a person whose documented specific actions, at least one of them within two years before the application, give probable cause to believe the person is likely to use a weapon unlawfully or to endanger the person or others.
- Nor to a person barred from firearms by section 724.26, a person convicted within the previous three years of a serious or aggravated misdemeanor in chapter 708 not involving a firearm or explosive, or a person prohibited by federal law.
A permit held by a service member deployed for military service that would otherwise expire during the deployment stays valid for ninety days after the deployment ends.
