Minors and Guns
Iowa Code § 724.22 — giving a handgun to someone under eighteen, outside the exceptions, is a serious misdemeanor
- Selling, loaning, giving or making available a rifle or shotgun to a minor, or a pistol or revolver to someone under eighteen, is a serious misdemeanor, and a class D felony after that.
- A parent, guardian or adult spouse, or another with their express consent, may let a minor have a rifle or shotgun for a lawful use.
- A parent, guardian or adult spouse may let a minor have a pistol or revolver under direct supervision, or during instruction.
Leaving a loaded firearm unsecured where a child under fourteen is likely to get it, without a trigger lock or a locked box, is unlawful when the child then gets it without permission.
