Time Off to Vote

Iowa Code § 49.109 — enough time off to make two consecutive hours while the polls are open

A voter who does not have two consecutive hours off work while the polls are open is entitled to enough time off that, with the nonworking time, totals two consecutive hours during polling hours.

  • The employee applies individually and in writing before election day.
  • The employer designates the period to be taken.
  • No penalty, and no deduction from regular salary or wages, follows from the absence.
