A Wild Animal as a Pet
K.S.A. 32-1302 — no new big cats, bears or venomous snakes, and the old ones are registered
A dangerous regulated animal is a lion, tiger, leopard, jaguar, cheetah or mountain lion, a bear, any of their hybrids, or any non native venomous snake. No one may possess, buy, sell or otherwise acquire one, or let one breed, except as the section allows.
Who handles this in Kansas: legal aid programs, lawyer referral and the state offices, listed in the Kansas directory.
Animals already kept are registered. Anyone who has one must register it in writing with the local animal control authority, listing each animal, where it is kept and any designated handler, and give the microchip number when there is one. The authority may inspect the premises.
Federally licensed facilities that meet the section's conditions may keep their inventory. Whether a particular animal is allowed is a question for local animal control or a licensed Kansas attorney.
