Discrimination at Work
K.S.A. 44-1009 — no hiring, firing or pay decisions by race, religion, color, sex, disability, national origin, ancestry or age
An employer may not refuse to hire, fire, or treat anyone differently in pay or in the terms of the job because of race, religion, color, sex, disability, national origin or ancestry, or follow a practice that in fact discriminates without a valid business necessity.
Who handles this in Kansas: Disability Rights Center of Kansas; and legal aid programs, lawyer referral and the state offices, listed in the Kansas directory.
The same is unlawful because of age without a valid business motive, and so is cutting anyone's wage to comply with the age discrimination act.
- A job ad or application may not express a limitation by any of those traits, unless it is a bona fide occupational qualification.
- No one may be fired or punished for opposing a forbidden practice, or for filing a complaint, testifying or helping in a proceeding.
