Driving While Suspended
La. R.S. 32:415 — up to $500 or 6 months, and the suspension grows by a year
It is unlawful to drive on a public highway while a license from Louisiana or any other state is suspended, revoked or cancelled.
- A driver with an ordinary license may be fined up to $500, jailed up to 6 months, or both, and face a civil penalty of up to $1,250.
- A commercial license holder may be fined up to $5,000, with a civil penalty of up to $2,500.
- A conviction for any driving offense during the suspension extends it by 1 year from the date a new license could otherwise have been sought.
- Where the suspension came from an impaired driving case, the court may order an ignition interlock for the rest of it.
Driving while suspended at the time of a second or later impaired driving offense carries $300 to $500 and 7 days to 6 months, with at least 7 days served.
