La. R.S. 32:76.1 — a driver passing a bicycle leaves at least 3 feet
A person riding a bicycle on a highway has all the rights and all the duties of the driver of a vehicle, except where the bicycle rules say otherwise.
Three feet to pass. A driver passing a bicycle going the same way leaves a safe distance of not less than 3 feet and keeps that clearance until safely past. A violation carries a fine of not more than $250.
- A rider keeps as near the right side as practicable, except to pass, to turn left, to approach a right turn, or to avoid hazards or a lane too narrow to share.
- Riders go no more than two abreast except on paths set aside for bicycles.
- A rider may use the shoulder of the road.
