The Golf Cart On The Street
MCL 257.657a — a village, city or township under 65,000 may allow them, and the driver is 16 and licensed
By local resolution. A village, city or township with a population of fewer than 65,000 may by resolution allow golf carts on its streets, subject to the section. A county board may disapprove a township's resolution after a hearing on environmental damage or public safety, with at least 45 days' notice.
- An individual does not operate a golf cart on any street unless at least 16 years old and licensed to drive.
- The operator follows the signal requirements for vehicles and rides as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable.
- The local government may keep a list of golf carts and operators, without charging a fee for it.
The section's further rules on speed, hours and highways are not all reproduced here. Low-speed vehicles registered as motor vehicles, all-terrain and utility vehicles, private roads, and the local ordinance itself are outside this page. Whether a particular street is designated, and what the local rules require, are questions for the local government or a licensed Michigan attorney.
