MCL 257.648 — determine it is safe, then signal before stopping or turning, by hand or by device
Before stopping or turning. The operator of a vehicle or bicycle on a highway, before stopping or turning from a direct line, first determines that it can be done in safety and gives a signal as the section requires.
By hand or by device. The signal is given by hand and arm, or by a mechanical or electrical device that conveys an intelligible signal to other traffic.
| The signal | In a vehicle | On a bicycle |
|---|---|---|
| The signalLeft turn | In a vehicleLeft hand and arm extended horizontally | On a bicycleLeft hand and arm extended horizontally |
| The signalRight turn | In a vehicleLeft hand and arm extended upward | On a bicycleLeft hand and arm upward, or right hand and arm horizontally |
| The signalStop or decrease speed | In a vehicleLeft hand and arm extended downward | On a bicycleLeft hand and arm extended downward |
The section sets no distance before a turn. Hand and arm signals, and the equipment a vehicle must carry for them, are set out in neighboring sections that are not all on this page. What a particular stop or ticket means is a question for a licensed Michigan attorney.
