The Value On Your Tax Bill
MCL 211.30 — the March board of review, starting the second Monday in March
The March board of review. The board of review meets on the second Monday in March, or on the Tuesday or Wednesday following if the city or township so authorizes. Its first meeting starts between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and lasts at least 6 hours, with at least 6 more hours that week.
Hours for working people. The board meets a total of at least 12 hours during the week of the second Monday in March to hear protests, and holds at least 3 of those hours after 6 p.m.
What it can do. At the request of the assessed person or an agent, and on sufficient cause shown, the board corrects the assessed value or tentative taxable value so the valuation is relatively just and proper. Persons who appeared to file a protest at a scheduled meeting or appointment are given an opportunity to be heard.
What happens after the first level of review, and the exemptions that change what is owed, are set out in other sections that are not on this page. Whether a particular assessment can be lowered is a question for a licensed Michigan attorney or appraiser.
