Changing A Name

Minn. Stat. 259.10 — after six months in the state, an application in district court

A person who has lived in Minnesota for six months may apply to the district court of the county of residence to change the person's name, and those of minor children and a joining spouse. The person appears in person and proves identity by at least two witnesses. A minor's application is made by a guardian or next of kin.

A false statement in the application made with intent to defraud is a misdemeanor. A minor child's name is not changed without notice to both parents.
