Earned Sick And Safe Time
Minn. Stat. 181.9446 — one hour for every 30 worked, up to 48 hours a year
One hour for every 30. A Minnesota employee accrues at least one hour of earned sick and safe time for every 30 hours worked, up to 48 hours a year unless the employer agrees to more. It starts accruing on the first day of work and may be used as it accrues.
Unused time carries over, with a total balance of no more than 80 hours unless the employer agrees to more. An employee exempt from overtime is treated as working 40 hours a week, or the normal shorter week.
- The employee's own illness, injury, health condition, diagnosis, care or preventive care, or arranging or attending a family member's funeral or handling matters after a death.
- Caring for a family member with the same needs.
- Absence because of domestic abuse, sexual assault or stalking of the employee or a family member, for medical care, victim services, counseling, relocation or legal action.
- A closure for weather or a public emergency, of the workplace or a family member's school or place of care.
- Exposure to a communicable disease that health authorities say would jeopardize others.
