Where Nobody May Smoke
Minn. Stat. 144.414 — no smoking in a public place, a public meeting, a workplace or public transportation
The rule. Smoking is not permitted, and no person smokes, in a public place, at a public meeting, in a place of employment, or in public transportation, except as the section or its companion provides.
- In a licensed day care center, family home or group family day care home during hours of operation, and a provider who permits smoking outside those hours tells parents in writing and orally.
- In any area of a hospital, clinic, doctor's office or other health care facility, with narrow allowances for residents in designated rooms.
- In public transportation vehicles, except a driver using the vehicle for personal use.
Cannabis smoking, local ordinances that go further, rules in rental leases, and how a complaint is made and enforced are outside this page. Whether a particular place falls inside an exception is a question for a licensed Minnesota attorney or the agency that enforces the law.
