An owner may not drive the vehicle without that insurance, drive it or let it be driven without evidence of insurance in the vehicle, or refuse to surrender the evidence to a peace officer on demand. Showing it on a phone does not consent to the officer looking at anything else on the device.
$600 to $1,000, or $100. A violation is a misdemeanor with a fine of not less than $600 nor more than $1,000. For a first violation the fine drops to $100 if the person has a liability policy by sentencing. A person who shows the court the insurance was in effect when demanded is not found guilty or fined.
A conviction for driving without the insurance suspends the driver's license until proof of financial responsibility is shown, and that proof is kept up for 3 years after reinstatement.
Where the Department cannot verify a registered vehicle's insurance, it asks the owner, who has 15 days to answer. Without an answer, a notice of suspension follows, and unless coverage is verified within 10 days the registration is suspended and the plates are returned. Where the owner shows extenuating circumstances, the Department may reinstate for a $50 fee or lift the suspension.
A moped is not covered by the coverage section, and the fleet and self-insurance exceptions to the reduced fine are not reproduced here. Applying these rules to a particular stop or notice is for a court and a licensed Nevada attorney.
