What a copy can cost. A copy is furnished on payment of postage and the cost of copying, not more than 60 cents per page for photocopies and a reasonable cost for X-rays and similar images. No administrative or service fee of any kind may be added.

Records needed for a Social Security claim or appeal, or for a needs-based benefit program, are copied free, within 30 days, when the request comes with documentation of the claim, and cannot be refused because the patient is unable to pay. The estate's representative, or the parent of a minor who died, can inspect a deceased patient's records.
