ORC 4509.101 — the suspension with no date on it
This is the most common suspension in Ohio and the most misunderstood, and the misunderstanding is always the same one. People wait it out. The first financial responsibility suspension has no date on it to wait out.

The suspension does not only reach the licence. The registrar can direct a person to surrender a certificate of registration, licence plates, a driver's licence, or all of them, and what is surrendered is destroyed rather than held.
There are two ways into it, and only one of them involves a traffic stop. The first is being asked for proof at a stop or after a crash and not having it. The second is a letter.
Driving while that suspension is running is its own offence with its own section, separate from the suspension and from whatever produced it. That is the step that turns an administrative problem into a criminal one, and it is also the route by which a car gets towed on the roadside.
Clearing it is a filing rather than a payment alone. Coverage has to be in place, a proof of financial responsibility filing has to be made with the bureau by the insurer, the reinstatement fee has to be paid, and that filing then has to be maintained for a period the registrar sets. A policy that lapses during that period restarts the problem rather than continuing it.

The reinstatement figures above are the ones the section sets and they are separate from any fine a court imposes for a related offence. Limited driving privileges during a suspension run on their own sections and are not automatic. Whether a lapse happened on the date in a letter is a factual question between a person and their insurer before it is a legal one, and the bureau is where a current suspension status is confirmed rather than this page.
