Suspended Or Expelled

Public School Code 1318 — a temporary suspension by the principal, and expulsion only by the board after a proper hearing

Temporary suspension. A principal or teacher in charge of a public school may temporarily suspend a pupil for disobedience or misconduct, and promptly notifies the district superintendent or the secretary of the board of school directors.

Longer, or for good. The board may, after a proper hearing, suspend the child for a time it sets, or permanently expel the child.

Who holds the hearing. The hearing, suspension, or expulsion may be delegated to a committee of the board or a qualified hearing examiner, but the examiner's decision must be approved by the board.
