Owning one is not the crime. A person who lawfully possesses a prohibited firearm may sell or transfer it to a federally licensed dealer, or to someone outside the state who may lawfully possess it.

  • R.I. Gen. Laws § 11-47.2-2

Large capacity feeding devices are banned to make, sell, buy or possess, except by a licensed dealer, law enforcement and active duty service members. A violation is punished by imprisonment of not more than five years, or a fine up to $5,000.

A person who lawfully had one on June 20, 2022 was given one hundred eighty days to modify it so it holds no more than ten rounds, surrender it, or transfer it to a dealer or someone out of state.

Which firearms count as prohibited is set by the chapter's definitions. A particular firearm is a question for a licensed Rhode Island attorney.
