S.C. Code 16-13-30 — $2,000 or less is petit larceny; above that, grand larceny

  • $2,000 or less: petit larceny, a misdemeanor tried in magistrates or municipal court, carrying a fine of up to $1,000 or up to thirty days.
  • More than $2,000 but less than $10,000: grand larceny, a felony carrying up to five years.
  • $10,000 or more: grand larceny, a felony carrying up to ten years.

That is how larceny is graded by the value of what was taken. Grand larceny may also be punished by a fine in the court's discretion.
