Pulling Over for a Siren
Utah Code 41-6a-904 — pull to the right, stop, and stay 500 feet back
When an authorized emergency vehicle approaches using its siren or lights, a driver yields the right of way, moves immediately as close as possible to the right edge or curb clear of any intersection, and stops until the emergency vehicle has passed, unless a peace officer directs otherwise.
Who handles this in Utah: legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Utah directory.
- No driver may follow closer than 500 feet behind an emergency vehicle using its signals, or pass one that is moving.
- No driver may stop within 500 feet of a fire apparatus stopped in answer to a fire alarm.
A violation is an infraction, and the section also requires a four hour live classroom defensive driving course, with the license suspended for 90 days if the course is not completed within 90 days of sentencing or the plea.
