12 V.S.A. § 5531 — claims up to $10,000 in a simple, informal procedure
- Small claims hears civil money claims of not more than $10,000, other than slander or libel, and a claim over that cannot be split.
- When the claim is over $3,500, the defendant may ask for a specially assigned judicial officer.
- It has no jurisdiction over collecting a consumer credit or medical debt over $5,000.
- Any party may appeal to Superior Court, which decides on the small claims record.
