Va. Code 18.2-57 — assault and battery, and a felony against an officer on duty

Maliciously shooting, stabbing, cutting or wounding someone, or causing bodily injury by any means, with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or kill, is a Class 3 felony. Done unlawfully but not maliciously, with the same intent, it is a Class 6 felony.
