Assistance Dogs In Public
Va. Code 51.5-44 — guide, hearing and service dogs, with no extra charge
In Virginia, a person with a disability has the same rights as others to the full and free use of streets, sidewalks, public buildings and other public places.
- A totally or partially blind person may be accompanied by a guide dog in harness.
- A deaf or hard of hearing person may be accompanied by a hearing dog on a blaze orange leash.
- A mobility impaired or otherwise disabled person may be accompanied by a service dog in a harness, backpack or vest identifying it as a trained service dog.
None of them is required to pay an extra charge for the dog. A dog in training, at least six months of age and identified as the section requires, may also accompany an experienced trainer.
The person is liable for any damage the dog does to the premises or facilities. Whether an animal qualifies is a question for a licensed Virginia attorney.
