The Golf Cart On The Street

Va. Code 46.2-916.2 — golf carts only on highways the local government has designated by ordinance

Designated by ordinance. No public highway may be designated for golf carts and utility vehicles unless the governing body of the county, city or town has reviewed and approved it. A governing body may authorize them on designated highways by ordinance, after considering the speed, volume and character of traffic and finding the use compatible with transportation plans and the statewide pedestrian policy.

Limits. No highway is designated where golf cart operation would impede the safe and efficient flow of traffic, and a town without its own police department may not authorize golf carts, except for the towns the section names. The locality that authorizes them installs and maintains the signs.

Low-speed vehicles registered as motor vehicles, all-terrain and utility vehicles, private roads, and the local ordinance itself are outside this page. Whether a particular street is designated, and what the local rules require, are questions for the local government or a licensed Virginia attorney.
