The Ticket In The Mail
Veh. Code 21455.5 — a sign within 200 feet, and 30 days of warnings before the first citation
California allows an intersection to be equipped with an automated traffic enforcement system only if the governmental agency using it meets the section's requirements.
- Signs posted within 200 feet of the intersection, clearly indicating the system and visible to traffic approaching from each direction it covers.
- Before issuing citations, a program of warning notices only for 30 days, and a public announcement at least 30 days before enforcement starts.
- Only a governmental agency, in cooperation with a law enforcement agency, may operate the system, with uniform guidelines for screening and issuing violations.
Speed cameras, school bus and school zone cameras, and local ordinances are governed by other provisions or not at all, and are not on this page. Whether a particular notice was issued correctly, and the effect of ignoring one, are questions for a licensed California attorney.
