Housing Discrimination

Gov. Code 12955 — source of income, gender identity and veteran status among the protected grounds

In California it is unlawful for a housing owner to discriminate against or harass anyone because of race, color, religion, sex, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, ancestry, familial status, source of income, disability, veteran or military status, or genetic information.

  • The owner may not ask about most of those characteristics of someone seeking to buy or rent.
  • No one may publish a notice or advertisement indicating a preference or limitation on those grounds.
  • Lenders and others financing housing may not discriminate on them.
