625 ILCS 5/11-502 — alcohol in the passenger area only in the original container with the seal unbroken
No driver may transport, carry, possess or have alcoholic liquor in the passenger area of a motor vehicle on a highway except in the original container with the seal unbroken, and no passenger may have it in a passenger area except the same way.
Who handles this in Illinois: Illinois State Bar Association, Illinois Lawyer Finder; and legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Illinois directory.
- The rule does not apply to passengers in a limousine, on a chartered bus, or in a motor home, used the way those vehicles ordinarily are.
- The driver of any of those vehicles still may not consume or have alcoholic liquor in or about the driver's area.
A driver convicted a second time within one year of a similar conviction faces suspension of driving privileges, and a driver under 21 at the time faces loss of them.
