Taken in for a Mental Health Evaluation
405 ILCS 5/3-606 — an officer may take a person to a facility on reasonable grounds of immediate danger
A peace officer may take a person into custody and transport them to a mental health facility when the officer has reasonable grounds to believe the person is subject to involuntary admission on an inpatient basis and needs immediate hospitalization to protect them or others from physical harm.
Who handles this in Illinois: Illinois State Bar Association, Illinois Lawyer Finder; and legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Illinois directory.
At the facility the officer may complete the petition for admission. Where someone else completes it, the transporting officer's name, badge number and employer go in the petition as a potential witness.
