Carrying a Handgun
IC 35-47-2-3 — no license is needed to carry at 18 or older for a person not otherwise prohibited
A person at least eighteen who is not prohibited from carrying or possessing a handgun under state or federal law needs no license or permit from the state to carry a handgun in Indiana.
Who handles this in Indiana: legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Indiana directory.
A license is still issued, at no fee, to someone who wants it, for instance to carry in another state under a reciprocity agreement. Residents apply to the local chief of police, or the county sheriff where there is none, and the investigation includes a check of the federal background check system.
- A person convicted of a felony, or under eighteen, or under twenty-three after a delinquency finding for what would be a felony.
- A person arrested for a Level 1 to 4 felony, or a felony while armed or involving violence, where a court found probable cause, until acquitted or the charge is dismissed.
- A person barred by federal law, or prohibited from carrying under the state's list.
A license holder reports an arrest, conviction or other change bearing on eligibility in writing to the superintendent within 30 days, and a change of name or address within 60 days. The names of license holders and what they submitted are confidential.
Private property owners keep the right to ban firearms on their property, and five year and lifetime licenses issued before July 1, 2022 stay valid.
