Open Meetings
IC 5-14-1.5-5 — notice at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays
Meetings of the governing bodies of public agencies are open at all times so members of the public can observe and record them, and no secret ballot vote may be taken. A school board allows oral public comment from those present before it takes final action on a topic.
Who handles this in Indiana: legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Indiana directory.
Public notice of the date, time and place of a meeting or executive session is given at least 48 hours before it, excluding Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays, by posting at the agency's principal office and delivering it to news media that asked for notices by December 31 for the coming year.
A meeting called for an emergency involving actual or threatened injury to people or property may go ahead without the 48 hours, with the same notice to requesting media as members get, and a posted notice.
