Rent and Rent Increases
IC 32-31-5-4 — at least 30 days written notice before the rental agreement is changed
Unless a written rental agreement provides otherwise, a landlord gives the tenant at least 30 days written notice before modifying the rental agreement.
Who handles this in Indiana: legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Indiana directory.
No city, town or county may regulate rental rates for privately owned property unless the General Assembly authorizes it, nor regulate tenant screening, security deposits, applications, lease terms, disclosures, the parties' rights, or a landlord's fees; such an ordinance is void. Property subsidized to provide reduced rents is outside that rule.
The retaliation chapter does not stop a landlord from raising rent to what comparable market rentals charge, at the end of the term or during it where the agreement provides for that.
