What a Tenant Owes
IC 32-31-7-5 — clean, careful use, the rules in place at signing, and working smoke detectors
A tenant's obligations under the chapter are these.
Who handles this in Indiana: legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Indiana directory.
- Complying with the obligations health and housing codes place primarily on tenants.
- Keeping the areas the tenant uses reasonably clean, and using the electrical, plumbing, sanitary and heating and cooling systems, elevators and appliances reasonably.
- Refraining from defacing, damaging, destroying, impairing or removing any part of the premises.
- Following the reasonable rules in place when the agreement was made, and amended rules as the agreement provides.
- Keeping each smoke detector working, replacing batteries as needed, and giving the landlord notice of a hard wired one believed not to work.
At the end of occupancy, the premises go back clean and in proper condition, ordinary wear and tear excepted.
