After a Crash
Iowa Code § 321.263 — a name, an address, the registration number, and reasonable help to anyone hurt
- A driver in a crash that injures or kills someone stops immediately at the scene or as close as possible, and returns to and stays at the scene.
- A driver in a crash that damages only an attended vehicle moves an operable vehicle off the traveled roadway if it can be done safely, then stops.
- The driver gives a name, address and the vehicle's registration number, shows the license on request, and gives an injured person reasonable assistance, including arranging transport for medical treatment.
Leaving the scene of a crash with injury is a serious misdemeanor, and with serious injury an aggravated misdemeanor. Leaving a damage only crash is a simple misdemeanor punished as a scheduled violation.
