Iowa Code § 216.15 — a complaint to the civil rights commission within 300 days

No one may refuse to sell, rent or lease housing, or set different terms, because of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, disability or familial status.

  • A claim is not maintained unless a complaint is filed with the agency within 300 days after the practice.
  • After the complaint has been on file 60 days, the complainant may ask for a release to sue in district court.
  • The suit is barred unless begun within 90 days after the release.
