A Minor and a Handgun
La. R.S. 14:95.8 — no one under 18 may knowingly have a handgun, outside the uses the statute lists
It is unlawful for anyone under the age of 18 knowingly to possess a handgun on his person. A first conviction carries a fine of not more than $100 and not less than 90 days nor more than 6 months.
- Attending a hunter's safety or firearms safety course, or practicing at an established range.
- Hunting or trapping under a valid license, or traveling to or from those activities with an unloaded gun.
- Being on property with the permission of a parent or guardian and of the owner or lessee.
- Being at home with a parent's or guardian's permission, or carrying a copy of a parent's or guardian's written permission.
Selling or otherwise delivering for value any firearm to a minor is a separate crime, and not knowing the buyer's age is no defense. It carries a fine of not more than $300, up to 6 months, or both.
