A Teen Driver's License

La. R.S. 32:407 — 50 hours of practice and 180 days on a learner's license before the intermediate license at 16

A minor's application is signed by a parent with legal custody, or by the tutor or other custodian; where custody is joint, only the domiciliary parent may sign. A learner's license follows an approved driver's education course and a vision and knowledge test.

  • A parent or guardian attests to at least 50 hours of supervised driving with a licensed adult at least 21, 15 of them at night.

  • Under 17, the learner's license has been held at least 180 days with no at-fault crash and no conviction for a moving violation, a seat belt or curfew violation, or a drug or alcohol offense.

Home by 11. No one under 17 may drive on a public road between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent, tutor or other person 21 or older who has custody. On an intermediate license, a licensed parent or guardian, a licensed adult 21 or older, or a licensed sibling 18 or older also counts.

From 6 p.m. to 5 a.m., an intermediate driver without a licensed parent, guardian or adult 21 or older carries no more than one passenger under 21 from outside the family. After twelve consecutive months on the intermediate license with a clean record, full privileges may issue.
