A Sale at the Door
32 M.R.S. § 4664 — 3 full business days to cancel by mail
When a seller makes the first contact, by a visit or a call, and sells merchandise somewhere other than the seller's place of business, the consumer may void the sale by notice and by returning or making available what was delivered.
Who handles this in Maine: Maine Attorney General, Consumer Protection; and legal aid programs and the state offices, listed in the Maine directory.
Three business days. Written notice by ordinary mail within 3 full business days after the day of the sale is enough, addressed to the seller at the address on the contract. It takes effect when mailed and needs no particular form.
The contract is in writing, signed by both, dated, with the terms, the seller's permanent business address and a statement of the right to cancel, and the buyer gets a signed copy at once. A seller who leaves those out commits a Class E crime, and a Class D crime when it is intentional.
