The Last Hundred Feet

Md. Code, Transp. § 21-604 — a turn signal given continuously during at least the last 100 feet, and no courtesy signals

Only with reasonable safety, and only after a signal. A person may not turn into a private road or driveway, turn from a direct course, or move right or left on a roadway or from a shoulder or bikeway onto a roadway, unless it can be done with reasonable safety; and, if any other vehicle might be affected, may not turn until giving an appropriate signal.

The last 100 feet. When required, a signal of intention to turn right or left is given continuously during at least the last 100 feet before turning, except that a bicyclist may interrupt it to keep control of the bicycle.

Stopping. If there is an opportunity to signal, a person may not stop or suddenly decrease speed until signaling to the driver immediately behind.

What the signals are for. They may indicate an intention to turn, change lanes, or start from a stopped, standing or parked position, and may not be flashed as a courtesy or do pass signal.

Hand and arm signals, and the equipment a vehicle must carry for them, are set out in neighboring sections that are not all on this page. What a particular stop or ticket means is a question for a licensed Maryland attorney.
