Transp. § 22-406 — at least 35% light transmittance, and a repair order with the citation

In Maryland, tinting material added after a vehicle is manufactured must allow a light transmittance of at least 35% through the window. A citation and a repair order. An officer who sees a violation may stop the driver and, along with a citation, issue a safety equipment repair order.

Installers. A person may not install window tinting material that does not meet the light transmittance requirement.

A physician's certification. A person who must be protected from the sun for medical reasons is exempt if the owner has in the vehicle a written certification from a physician licensed in the State, in the form the State Police require. It lasts as long as the physician determines, up to 2 years, or indefinitely for a permanent condition.

Safety glass standards, easily removable materials and the repair order process are not all on this page. Whether a particular film passes, and how a reading was taken, are questions for a licensed Maryland attorney.
